9/20/07 Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition

What is the Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition and how is it useful? Explain how to find the mean of a set of numbers and explain the purpose of finding a mean. Give examples of like terms, coefficient, and constant. What assignment was given in class?

The Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition is a way in which multiplication is applied to addition to two or more numbers inside a set of parentheses that can be multiplied by a factor outside the parentheses. It is useful because it is the first step in solving an equation; This property simplifies the equation to make it easier to solve.

Example:
4(x+5)
To simplify the equation, you must distribute the 4 evenly among the x and 5.

Therefore, the equation now becomes 4x+20.

Mean:
It is helpful to find the mean within a set of numbers because it is the average.

Example:
2,6,6,10

Add the numbers together...
2+6+6+10=24

Divide the sum by the amount of numbers you added...
24/4=6

Mean? 6

Like Terms, Coefficients, and Constants.:

6x+3/4-5x

Like Terms:6x and 5x; 3 and 4
Coefficients:6 and 5
Constants:3 and 4
