9/13/07 Adding and Subtracting Real Numbers

How do you add positive and negative numbers? Why is it important to know how to add before learning how to subtract positive and negative numbers? What four properties of addition did we talk about? Please remember to state the assignment given in class.

You have to look at the sign from the second number to see which direction on the number line you will go. Then look at both numbers and do the math.

It is more important because it is easier to add numbers? I am really not sure

The four properties were commutative, associative, identity and inverse properties.

When adding and subtracting positives and negatives you first subtract and the answer will have the same sign as the larger number did in the problem. It is important to learn how to add positives and negatives first because it is easer to work form left to right then right to left when working the problem. We also learned about four different types of adding properties. They are commutative, associative, identity, and inverse. One example of commutative is 3+4=4+3 this means that know matter what order you put the numbers the answer will always be the same. An example of associative is (1+2)+3=1+(2+3). This is pretty much the same as commutative. The next one is identity and an example of this would be 7+0=7 and this means that you can take any number and add 0 to it and you answer will always be that number. The last one we learned about was inverse. An example of that would be 3+(-3)=0 this means that you can take any number and then you take its opposite and add them together and you will always get 0. You could also think of it as the two numbers cancelling each other out.
